Course description and aims

The concept of "diversity" is quite an important element in our lives, academic fields and professional practices in the modern society. The first step to think about a diverse society, each student has a chance to have an artistic view to the world, spend time in improving the ability of understanding various ideas and expressing idea in order to behave proactively and productively for the development of a sustainable community with the joy of coexistence by cherishing multiple cultures.
The aim of this course is particularly to introduce a fresh view of contemporary art when students learn to understand one another and develop more friendly relationships regardless of nationalities, regions of origin, languages and cultural backgrounds. As much as free from language barriers under the artistic instruction of the guest lecturers who have outstanding knowledges and experiences of the art field, the students in the class try to make an artistic creation possibly any genre of expression including music and performance. The accomplishment of the course is expected to be ready to present the final production of contents that would provide a sound basis for further expression and discussion of diversity and multicultural understanding in future.

By participating this course, students will be able to:
1. Have a positive attitude toward building relationships with people with diversity, including international students of Tokyo Tech.
2. Have an opportunity to deepen the idea of cultural understanding through art, and to have awareness of the commonalities and differences between the approaches of arts and engineering.
3. Experience exchanging ideas/opinions each other and collaborative team work in a multicultural environment.

Class flow

During the classes, the assignments will be working on individual art creations and presentations. The medium, materials or media, and the way of output, genre, can be freely selected by each student. When you come to the class, please be prepared to think about what you would like to challenge and what is your talent/favorite of artistic expressions for the assignments.
Example) These are just some examples, but not limited:
Genre: Movie, photo, painting, sculpture, song, music instrument, poet, performance,
installation, etc.
Medium: Water colour, paper, brush, music instrument, found object, body, verbal, clay, food, etc.

Topic “Unpredictable (something hard to anticipate, something not to be able to know beforehand)”
During the 2 first workshop in the classes, each creations are done by the collaborations in pairs. The workshop would bring you some environments which is an individual art project but at the same time uncontrollable one. Under the circumstance, each student communicates/helps with other students and work on the art creation. The final assignment of the creation will be individual artwork.

The seven classes include self-introduction, introduction of activity of instructors, art creation and the final presentation. Communication among local students, international students and instructors in creating works will be supported by the main instructor throughout the classes.

Class 1 Monday, November 13th from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. Workshop 1. Visiting the gallery with the lecture on its exhibition and activities. Introduction of Reiko Setuda and self-introduction by students. The class will be held at Ginza Maison Hermes. Assignment: Due Monday, November 6th. "What is art to me?" in one-page long essay. During the first class, responding to this question from the instructors, students will introduce his/her country's artworks and experiences that have moved you, your own interest, relationship to art or your favorite genres.
Class 2 Monday, November 13th from 3:15 pm to 5pm. Workshop 1. Workshop 1: creation in pairs Assignment: Prepare to think about the presentation of individual art creation with five minutes, a topic and medium. Bring the necessary medium (Paper, tubes of color, music instrument, etc) and come with your specific image to the classroom.
Class 3 Monday, November 20th from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. Based on the discussion in the previous class, the instructors will introduce their other current art activities for further questions and discuss with students. The class will be held at Lecture Theater at Ookayama Campus (WL1-301, W531)
Class 4 Monday, November 20th from 3:15 pm to 5pm. Workshop 2. Workshop 2: creation in pairs The class will be held at H-B101 (H102), Main Building.
Class 5 Monday, November 27th from 1:30 pm to 3pm. Workshop, presentation and review. Continue the art creations followed by presentation and review. The class will be held at M-B107 (H104), Main Building.
Class 6 Monday, November 27th from 3:15 pm to 5pm. Workshop 6. Continue the art creations and preparation for the final presentation. The class will be held at M-B101 (H102), Main Building. Students will work on further production and build a presentation method for the final presentation.
Class 7 Monday, November 27th from 5:15 pm to 6:55 pm. Presentations. Final presentation, comments, review of the questions posed in the classes (what is art? How do you accept the diversity?). The class will be held at M-B101 (H102), Main Building. Students will present in public the achievements of the workshop. Their productions will receive comments in the discussion session.

Assessment criteria and methods

Assessment will be done from the comprehensive viewpoint by evaluating the student's effort in participation in the class activities, assignments (essay and art creation) and contribution to the creation and the final presentation.

Before the classes, please submit an essay entitled "Introduction of an art piece from my country" The capacity of students taking this course is about 20. The instructors would welcome the active participation of students who are interested in international co-learning and team work regardless of their language proficiency.
