Course description and aims

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) organizes the Tokyo Tech Winter Program, a short-term inbound exchange program for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at overseas universities to pursue individual research projects under Tokyo Tech faculty supervision.
In AY 2021, due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, Tokyo Tech offers Bringing Ideas in Remote Discussion (BIRD), a virtual exchange program for students from Tokyo Tech and The University of Melbourne. AY 2021 program theme is "New Normal in Mobility and Logistics."
Course registration must be done through "Course Addition" from the Tokyo Tech Portal after the successful selection to this course. For the details of the application to the course, see the link below.

Class flow

May vary by instructor. Professor Hiroshi Ueda (Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Tech), Associate Professor Kathryn Mumford and Professor Peter Lee (The University of Melbourne), and special lecturers each from JICA (The Japan International Cooperation Agency) and NARO (National Agriculture and Food Research Organization) will deliver their keynote lectures for the program.

Class 1 Prior learning part 1 (in January 2022) Train speaking in English for the preparation of Group work.
Class 2 Prior learning part 2 (in January 2022) Same as above.
Class 3 Orientation and opening ceremony. (2/10) Confirm the scheme of the program and meet with participants of the program.
Class 4 Icebreaking 1 (2/10) Through the activity for ice-breaking, know more about the participants of the both universities. The details of activity will be added later.
Class 5 Lecture 1 (2/10)Icebreaking 2 (2/15) Deepen knowledge of the technologies related to mobility and logistics for the new normal. Prepare the task for the group work. The details of lecture topic and lecturer will be added later.
Class 6 Icebreaking 2 (2/14) Through the activity for ice-breaking, know more about the participants of the both universities. The details of activity will be added later.
Class 7 Lecture 2 (2/15) Deepen knowledge of the technologies related to mobility and logistics for the new normal. Prepare the task for the group work. The details of lecture topic and lecturer will be added later.
Class 8 Lecture 3 (2/15) Same as above.
Class 9 Lecture 4 (2/16) Same as above.
Class 10 Group work 1: Guidance and task assignment (2/16) Understand the aim of the group work and decide group and task assigned to each participant.
Class 11 Group work 2: Discussion & Breakdown (2/17) Break down ideas in the group
Class 12 Group work 3: Discussion & Breakdown (2/18) Same as above.
Class 13 Group work 4: Preparation for the final presentations (2/18) Prepare the final presentation in each group.
Class 14 Final presentations (2/21) Present results of the group discussions. The most excellent presentation will be given the best presenter award.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis based on attendance, contribution to the group work and to the final presentation.
