Course description and aims

This course provides an overview of the rules of society and business that will significantly affect the students' careers in industry as leaders after completion of the doctoral degree program. Students will learn an overview of various rules such as intellectual property rights, standards, compliance, ethics, risk management, and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), as well as consider and discuss specific cases.

The aim of this course is to help students understand that they need to take the initiative in formulating social and business rules when building their careers in industry, rather than being passively subjected to them. The awareness to develop rules by one's initiative is essential to achieve innovation in the real world in cooperation with those who do not specialize in technology.

This course will be offered in 2Q and 4Q. Since the contents are the same, students are advised to select the course according to their own study plan.

The name of this course is changed from "Advanced Course on Social and Business Rules and Ethics," which was offered in AY2021.

Student learning outcomes

By taking this course, students acquire the following
1) Understand there are various rules in society and business which play a major role in utilizing technology, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
2) Understand when pursuing a career in the real world, it is necessary to not only understand the rules in general framework, but also to be actively involved in their development, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
3) understand compliance, ethics, crisis management, and SDGs, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.

Lecturers with extensive experience in the Japanese government, a public organization and private companies will deliver classes on various rules and regulations they have been involved with in their work based on their own experiences.

Class flow

Classes will be on-line via ZOOM. It is important to ensure interactivity between the lecturers and students in the class, so students should participate in real time in principle.

In classes, PowerPoint presentations will be used, with many examples and charts to facilitate understanding. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class by joining ZOOM polling and asking questions. An assignment will be given in each class, and students will be required to write and submit a report. The reports will be reflected in the evaluation and their contents should be something that students can refer back to in the future as they build their own careers. Feedback on submitted reports that would be valuable for students to share will be provided at a later date, with comments from the lecturer if necessary.

Class 1 Introduction, rules for industry-academia collaboration, fraud issues in industry (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand the importance of rules in business, rules for industry-academia collaboration, and quality and other fraud issues in industry, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 2 Rules related to business Students are able to understand the various laws and rules in business, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 3 Implementation of safety management, compliance, ethics, etc. in the company (NISHIO Taku) Students are able to understand how safety management is carried out in the company as well as its approach to the SDGs, and find out what will bw applicable for their future careers.
Class 4 SDGs and the importance of participation in rule making (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand SDGs initiatives in companies and the importance of participation in rule making including legislationan, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 5 Patent Act (SUGOU Shigeo) Students are able to understand the outline of Patent Act and how can be used in business, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 6 Copyright Act, Unfair Competition Prevention Act, Trademark Act, Design Act. (SUGOU Shigeo) Students are able to understand an overview of the Copyright Act, the Unfair Competition Prevention Act, the Trademark Act, and the Design Act, how they can be used in business, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.
Class 7 International standardization and wrap up of the course (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand that international standards can be developed by private sector engineers themselves, and find out what will be applicable for their future careers.

No textbook. In principle, lecture materials prepared by the lecturers will be uploaded to T2SCHOLA in advance of each class.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Assessment criteria and methods

Basically, an assignment is given in each class and the students are required to submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each class on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Classes are delivered in Japanese, so students should have Japanese language skills enough to understand the content of the classes.
Students can write their reports in either Japanese or English.
