Course description and aims

These lectures will cover career design strategies for future scientists and professionals in academia or industry.
The prospects of an international career will be discussed based on some particularities of the work and research environments in different countries. Suggestions will be given about practical ways of starting this career path.

Student learning outcomes

The goal of this intensive lecture series is to provide doctoral students with an overview of new trends in science and technology and the related career perspectives, specifically in a global environment. The students will learn how to explore prospective career paths, how to develop professional networking skills, and how to cope with challenges in the workplace. With a focus on international career development, the individual instructors will provide useful tips and tricks to the students planning to pursue research at an overseas institute and at the R&D departments of private companies and academia.

Class flow

This course includes a lecture, short class activity, and open discussion. The lecture will tackle several topics, including techniques and skills development, enhancement of communication and interpersonal skills, and coping with challenges in the workplace.
Four instructors with different specialized areas will give the same lectures intensively in 2Q and 3Q.
All the students will receive the information on Zoom URLs, can download instructors' lecture materials, and can upload their reports through T2SCHOLA.

Class 4 Monday, November 13, 5-8 period, Zoom “Towards becoming a successful practitioner of science-insights from the perspective of a physicist/materials scientist, with outlook to alternative careers” (Dan Ricinschi) ※There's a possibility that the schedule may be modified. Learn how to become a successful practitioner of science insights with an outlook on alternative careers.
