Course description and aims

This course provides an overview of the career paths of Tokyo Tech students after completing the master's degree program, and teaches the essential knowledge necessary for building their own careers for the future, such as social rules, ethics, the flow of money in companies and universities, and entrepreneurship, and how to build a career in industry and academia. The content of the classes is practical and can be efficiently understood from a broad framework, and corresponds to all career paths, including advancement to the doctoral course and entering the industry after completion of the master's degree program. Classes are given by faculties and lecturers who have rich practical experience in central government offices, universities and private companies.

The aim of this course is to provide master's students with basic knowledge and skills that will be useful to them when they build their own careers in society after completing the master's degree program. These knowledge and skills will also be useful in their job-hunting. In order to be active in society in the future after completing the master's degree program, it is extremely important for students to acquire "how to live" in addition to what they have learned in the specialized courses.　This is the purpose of the career development education at Tokyo Tech, and this course provides fundamentals necessary for this purpose in a comprehensive and condensed manner.

Three courses are offered in the 1Q (A1, A2, A3), one in the 2Q (B), and one in the 3Q (C). Students are recommended to select one according to their own study plans.

The name of this course is changed from "Master's Career Design," which was offered in AY(Academic Year)2021. Students who have already taken "Master's Career Design","Master's Career Plan", "Master's Career Design I", and "Master's Career Design II", which had been offered until AY2020, cannot take this course.

Student learning outcomes

By taking this course, students acquire the following;
1) Understand the various career paths available in the future by listening to lecturers who have extensive experience in academia and industry.
2) Understand the general framework such as social rules and the flow of money in companies, universities, as essential knowledge for job-hunting and building a future career.
3) Understand industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship.

Competencies that will be developed

Class flow

Classes will be on-line via ZOOM. Students are required to participate in real time in principle, in order to make sure interactivity between the lecturers and students in the class.

In classes, PowerPoint presentations will be used, with many examples and charts to facilitate understanding. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class by joining polling and asking questions.

An assignment will be given in each class, and students will be required to write and submit a report. The reports will be reflected in the evaluation and their contents should be something that students can refer back to in the future as they build their own careers.
Feedback on submitted reports that would be valuable for students to share will be provided at a later date, with comments from the lecturer when necessary.

No textbook. In principle, lecture materials prepared by the lecturers will be uploaded to T2SCHOLA in advance of each class.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Assessment criteria and methods

An assignment is given in each class and the students are required to submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each class on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Classes are delivered in Japanese, so students should have Japanese language skills enough to understand the content of the classes.
For assignment reports, both English and Japanese are acceptable.
Some career development courses are offered in English, so it is recommended that students take appropriate courses in the light of their own language skills.

Other

The corresponding GA for this course is GA0M.
The master's degree students are required to fulfil both GA0M and GA1M as well as earn at least 2 credits before completion.
Therefore, it is necessary to take at least one other career development course corresponding to GA1M, including those offered in each graduate major that can be regarded as career development courses, even if a student has gained a credit for this course.
Note that, for example, if you obtain a credits for the 'Master's Career Design Practice' (its corresponding GA is GA0M) in addition to a credits for this course does not mean that the requirements for the GA have been satisfied.
