Course description and aims

For students who learned engineering or science at Tokyo Tech and are expected to succeed after graduation, it is important to have a wide range of interests such as society, private companies, economy, legal and businesses, which have a close relationship with technology management, in addition to technical or scientific discipline.
The course covers a variety of subjects surrounding technology management including the structures and policies of the Japanese government, purposes and accounting systems of private enterprises, social and economic rules such as laws and international standards, and renewable energy and infrastructure businesses such as a overseas railways business, which surround technology management. The aim of the classes is to give a good opportunity for students whose majors are engineering or science to understand rather more important matters in many cases besides technology and science.

Student learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to give students a trigger to initiate further studies spontaneously with interests in various subjects surrounding technology management during attending at Tokyo Tech or after graduation, not to merely give students related knowledge.

Class flow

- In order for students to understand the lectures easily, a PowerPoint presentation including examples will be provided in every lecture,
- Students are required to submit a feedback card at every lecture, on which they should write reports and comments on the lecture of the day, such as what was newly noticed, what was impressive, or a question they wanted to study later. The cards submitted will be reflected in the evaluation.
- Both in the first class and the 8th class (last class), a report to be submitted later by students will be assigned. The reports submitted will be reflected in the evaluation.
- The first class of April 11th lasts only 45-minute, 1:30pm-2:05pm. But subsequent classes last 90-minute, 13:20pm-14:50pm.

Class 3 Government's support for technical development and project management to promote innovation and human resource development ; Outline of science and technology related budget and government's R&D projects and its influence on the industry. Given at the lecture.
Class 4 What is private companies?; The purpose of the company, accounting system, and innovation management Given at the lecture.
Class 5 Renewable energy ; Development and current business and prospects of renewable energy such as solar and wind power Given at the lecture.
Class 6 Overseas infrastructure business ; The actual situation of overseas infrastructure business such as railway, electric power generation, and water Given at the lecture.
Class 7 Laws and regulations; The classification and role of law including regulation, and influence of regulation for chemical safety and product safety on private companies’ activities Given at the lecture.
Class 8 International standardization ; Outline and significance of international standardization and certification Given at the lecture.
