Course description and aims

This course will cover mainly technology management issues in the industry, however R&D activity in academic arena is also considered. Technology management is discussed from the viewpoints of role of technology in the value creation process and the various practical management processes such as strategy, management process and human resource management.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students understand the value creation process, the difference between R&D management and technology management, various methodology and processes of technology management.The major issues will be technology strategy, R&D theme management processes, R&D human resource management, road map, business model innovation, marketing in R&D and the concept of open innovation etc.

Class flow

・This course is executed by using many Power Point slides with many figures, tables and pictures.
・Home assignment is give at each class.
・Students are requested to submit feedback card every class and the comments on the card are used for evaluation.
・The first day on Sept. 27 will be 45 minutes class from 15:05~15:50 and other classes will be 90 minutes form 15:05
~16:35.

Class 3 Strategic management and technology management; Relationship between innovation and technology management. Technology management and value creation process are also discussed, Position and the role of technology in corporate value creation activity is also focused. Select the items incorrect for the action of the headquarters in terms of technology management.
Class 4 Meaning of technology in the company and technology resource management; Realtionship between business and technology, Various activities of utilization of technology, Meaning of technology and its evaluation, Role of technology in the business competition. Self-evaluation of your own technology
Class 5 R&D theme management & marketing activity; Way of thinking about R&D theme management and its reality in the company, Various methodologies of R&D theme management such as Stage-Gate method are discussed. Importance and the actual action of marketing activities. Idea creation on "Unsolved market issues"
Class 6 Human resource management in the technology management; Way of thinking about human resource management in the R&D activity, Importance of motivation management,Dual ladder system, Meaning of doctor in the company, Various capabilities required to the researcher and the engineer. Recognition about the importance and self evaluation of the required capability & nature.
Class 7 Required action to the rapid changing management circumstance, Meaning and importance of the speed-up in R&D activity, Open innovation, Changing in the collaboration between university and industry, Business culture innovation in the company, Importance of the business model innovation Comments on the existing particular company form the view point of business model and the strategy.
Class 8 Management of newly created businesses; Growing process of company, Growth of company and new businesses, Way of thinking for development and deployment of new businesses, Planning of new businesses, Exploration of new business fields, New businesses and start-up company Comment on the issues happening recently on which you think that you recognize strong relationship with technology management
