Course description and aims

・The purpose of this course is to prepare for "Exercise of Practical Research on Mathematics Education II."
・Students need to find and clarify themes of practical research of education, master methods to utilize learning outcomes of mathematics education for problem-solving in daily life, and clarify problem-solving process and points for its instructions.
・Students make year instructional plans that clarify instruction of mathematical ways of viewing and thinking to make PBL in mathematics more effective.

Student learning outcomes

・Understand good/bad practices of PBL in mathematics and instructions of mathematical ways of viewing and thinking through performing literature reviews.
・Can explain methods of PBL in mathematics by showing concrete examples of SDGs through performing such activities by oneself according to the Warp and Woof model of problem-solving.
・Can make year instructional plans that clarify instruction of mathematical ways of viewing and reconstruction of domain-specific knowledge of mathematics to make learners enable to utilize learning outcomes of mathematics in the problem-solving contexts.

Keywords

Literature reviews, year instructional plan, PBL in mathematics, mathematical ways of viewing and thinking, SDGs, New Backward Design Method, Warp and Woof Model of Problem-solving

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Lessons are progressed as "Explanation of problem -- Exercise -- Group discussion" at the first lesson of each theme, and "Discussion about homework assignment -- Clarification of policy of improvement -- Group discussion" at the next lesson.
Please confirm the timetable of each lesson by the web-page of lesson schedule on the Teacher Promotion Course (https://www.te.ila.titech.ac.jp/)

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Find and clarify the problem of PBL in mathematics and plan to solve the problem. Literature review of PBL in mathematics, related research reports, useful data, and so on.
Class 2 Presentation and discussion of problem-solving plan of PBL in mathematics. A PBL activity plan and research report of the activity
Class 3 Clarify and generalize the methods to utilize learning outcomes of Mathematics in SDGs problems. A generalized model of PBL activity based on the Warp and Woof model / Preparing for attending the practical lessons
Class 4 Generate and discuss themes of Period for Integrated Studies (PIS) and PBL in Mathematics by associating each other. Prepare multiple themes for PIS and PBL in Mathematics.
Class 5 Attend the PBL in Mathematics at Tokyo Tech High School of Science and Technology. Arranging and summarizing questions and errors found in the practice lessons to clarify instructional methods for PBL in Mathematics.
Class 6 Clarify the instructional methods for promoting utilization of learning outcomes of Mathematics in problem-solving/ Make year instructional plans to help learners utilize learning outcomes of Mathematics in the problem-solving contexts. Share findings in the fourth lessons to summarize the points to design instructional materials / Making year plans by focusing on instructions of mathematical ways of viewing and thinking and 5W1H framework of domain-specific knowledge.
Class 7 Presentation and discussion of themes for developing an instructional material for PBL in Mathematics and year-plan of Mathematics I. Improve the year plans / Proposing some research topics of "Exercise of Practical Research on Mathematics Education II."
