Course description and aims

This course aims to learn Japanese expressions and language skills which are useful when you attend a lecture at a university. Specifically, students will be requested to write an essay and a short paper.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to acquire the basic skills of 1) writing a short report, 2) using useful Japanese idiomatic expressions, and 3) reading and using essential kanji characters in kun'yomi.
*In GSEP class, students will be able to understand basic Japanese structure, grammar and vocabulary and will be able to use it on a daily basis.

Class flow

After a brief explanation, pairs or groups of students will discuss the themes given in the classroom. Students will make a presentation about the discussion outcomes. Students will be required to work on improving their writing proficiency through class activities and writing assignments.
*In GSEP class, students will learn new expressions in Japanese following the textbook and will practice using them in a small group. Students will make a presentation using the expressions they have learned.

Class 2 Essay writing 2: Learn paragraph structure, Speech 1: Find your topic. Describe perfecting your writing style. Describe what the structure of a logically organized essay.
Class 3 Essay writing 3: Edit your essay, Speech 2: Learn effective speech skills. Review and edit your essay.
Class 4 Essay writing 4: Feedback, Academic writing 1: Learn the organization of an academic paper. Describe what report writing actually entails.
Class 5 Academic writing 2: Write an introduction and methods section, make research questions. Write an introduction and methods section. Find some useful expression to write an introduction and methods section.
Class 6 Academic writing 3: Represent data in graphs and tables. Practice how to represent data in graphs and tables.
Class 7 Academic writing 4: Write a result section. Write a result section. Make a topic and an outline of the speech. Consider what comments would help other students reflect on their presentations.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Assessment will be conducted based on speech 30%, writing activities 50%, and a report 20%.
*Assessment will be conducted based on quizzes 60%, writing activities 20% and speech 20%.
