Course description and aims

This class is for students who have already completed the intermediate 2 level. Through watching entertainment/educational programs on TV (or other audio-visual material), we will learn traditional Japanese culture, modern lifestyle, and underlying values of the Japanese people. In addition, we will practice listening skills.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Enrich life in Japan by understanding both external and internal aspects of Japanese culture.
2. Develop appropriate listening skills of spoken Japanese used in real life
The most important thing is that after 7weeks, each of you will have achieved your own goal and will feel your understanding of culture and language of Japan has deepened.

Keywords

audio-visual material, culture, lifestyle, sense of values, Japanese in real life

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

We will watch a DVD which highlights one topic at a class. Initially, focus on grasping a general idea of the whole story, rather than understanding every single word you hear. Handouts will help you with precise comprehension. On the other hand, maintain your own viewpoint while watching, because sometimes there is no simple right answer as with a “listening quiz”. You are encouraged to share your opinions on the topic. Homework will be assigned.
