Course description and aims

This course is for students who have studied for the TOEFL test but are not yet confident about their knowledge. It trains students in four skills in English with special focus on reading, writing and listening skills which are required to raise their score in the Reading and Writing sections of the test and to study at universities in English-speaking environment. It also introduces students to basic study skills in English and allows them to practice them in class.

・understand the content and format of the Reading and Writing sections of the TOEFL tests and the strategies to answer questions in these sections.
・enhance their knowledge of different academic subjects.
・develop academic skills in English and apply them to everyday situations.

Class flow

Using the textbook, students will work on Reading/Writing exercises in the TOEFL format. There will be group work sessions, as well as some listening exercises as part of integrated writing practices.
*The number of students may be limited, so if you wish to take this course, please be sure to attend the first class.

Class 1 Course Introduction Listening (1): Lesson 4 (Preparing for Integrated writing) Understand how the class will be conducted. Understand how to answer the listening questions.
Class 2 Reading (1): Lesson 3 (Main points/Details) Understand the reading passage in Lesson 3 and answer the questions there correctly. Identify the main points and details in the text.
Class 3 Writing (1): Lesson 11 (Agree/Disagree) Understand how to answer the writing questions in Lesson 11. Understand how to explain agreement or disagreement.
Class 4 Reading (2): Handouts (Summarizing 3) Understand the reading passage provided in class and answer the questions there correctly. Understand how to write accurate summaries.
Class 5 Writing (2): Lesson 12 (Giving Opinions) Understand how to answer the writing questions in Lesson 12. Understand how to give opinions.
Class 6 Reading (3): Handouts (Summarizing 4) Listening (2): Lesson 9 (Preparing for Integrated writing) Understand the reading passage provided in class and answer the questions there correctly. Better understand how to write accurate summaries. Understand how to answer the listening questions.
Class 7 Review and exam Writing (3): Lesson 7-(2) (Independent Writing) (Speaking tasks in the textbook will be used as writing tasks.) Review of the overall contents of the course. Understand how to answer independent writing questions.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
