Course description and aims

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Using the textbook, students will try to improve their Reading/Listening skills. Group work sessions will help students deepen their understanding of the materials, while providing them with opportunities to practice speaking English. Students will also practice writing short essays about related topics.

Class 3 Unit 9: A Sea Turtle's Tale Understand the video clip in Unit 9 and answer the questions there correctly. Write a short essay on a related topic.
Class 4 Mini-test 1 Unit 10: "Robot Cafe" Showcases AI's Potential Review the first half of the course. Understand the video clip in Unit 10 and answer the questions there correctly.
Class 5 Unit 11: More Than Just a Cafe Understand the video clip in Unit 11 and answer the questions there correctly. Write a short essay on a related topic.
Class 6 Unit 12: Heeding the Words of Younger People for a Better Future Understand the video clip in Unit 12 and answer the questions there correctly. Write a short essay on a related topic.
Class 7 Mini-test 2 Writing (a short essay on a news topic) Review the second half of the course. Write a short essay on a chosen topic.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
