Course description and aims

English 5 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

I've been working in the fields of theatre, music, and architecture as director of communications to assist their exchanges with other countries. Taking advantage of this experience, I've been teaching English at language schools for working adults/students based on a training method to become professional interpreters, which will be applied also in this class.

Class flow

1. While checking attendance, students are expected to speak a few sentences in English about their daily life. (15 minutes)
2. Practice English speech sounds and pronunciation (15 minutes)
3. Work on the textbook (50 minutes)
4. Read articles from English media (20 minutes)

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
