Course description and aims

English 5 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Class flow

This class is structured to improve students' skills for reading and writing by reading essays on current science topics in various fields, expanding their vocabulary, and practicing writing sentences so that they can express their own ideas in English. After learning new vocabulary, students will read the essay, understand its main idea and details, and practice reading the essay aloud. The rest of the class time will be spent on writing exercises using the expressions learned. Students will also learn about how to organize paragraphs in papers and articles.

Class 4 Unit 5 Drift Ice Comes & Unit 6 Linear Precipitation Band Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 25-36 of the textbook.
Class 5 Unit 7 Pollution Solution & Unit 8 Natural Hazards Mini Test Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 37-48 of the textbook.
Class 6 Unit 9 Between Low and High Tides Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 49-54 of the textbook.
Class 7 Unit 10 Underground Source of Energy & Review Mini Test Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 55-60 of the textbook. Write a summary of the reading section in English.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
