Course description and aims

This course trains students, who are interested in studying abroad for a year or longer, in listening and speaking skills. The course introduces students to a number of skills such as note-taking, inference, making educated guesses from context which enable them to understand lectures and participate in seminars when they study in an English-speaking environment.

Student learning outcomes

- Students will be able to grasp the overall contents and main points in lectures on academic subjects and summarize their content based on their structure and approach.
- Students will be able to answer questions in English clearly from other students in class.
- Students will understand note-taking, presentation and debate skills and apply them to their written and oral expressions in English.

Class flow

Students should prepare each week's assigned Listening chapter in the textbook as well as any Speaking tasks assigned in advance of the class. The materials of the week’s chapter will be explained by the instructor where necessary, but the core activities in class will be intensive listening and speaking practice with the instructor checking and giving feedback on individuals' work.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
