Course description and aims

Based on English 7, English 8 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Class flow

This class is structured to further improve students' skills for reading and writing by reading essays on social issues and current topics, expanding their vocabulary, and practicing writing sentences so that they can express their own ideas in English. After learning new vocabulary, students will read the essay, understand its main idea and details, and practice reading the essay aloud. The rest of the class time will be spent on vocabulary exercises to learn more words related to the topic of the essay, and writing exercises using the expressions learned. Students will also learn more about how to organize paragraphs in papers and articles.

Class 5 Unit 10 Globalization Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 60-65 of the textbook.
Class 6 Unit 11 Sex Education Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 68-72 of the textbook. Write your opinion on the topic in English.
Class 7 Review and term-end examination Review the scope of the exam.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
