Course description and aims

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:

・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Students will practice reading skills by using the textbook. Students will also practice writing short essays on topics related to each chapter.
Class activities include group work, short presentations, and quizzes.

Class 2 Chapter 6 (2) Reading and Writing On "Virtual Reality" Understand the details of the text in Chapter 6 and express one's opinions on the topic.
Class 3 Chapter 8 Reading and Writing On "UK Food Waste" Understand the text in Chapter 8 and express one's opinions on the topic.
Class 4 Chapter 10 (1) Reading and Writing On "Burnable Ice" Understand the text in Chapter 10 and express one's opinions on the topic.
Class 5 Chapter 10 (2) Reading and Writing On "Burnable Ice" Understand the details of the text in Chapter 10 and express one's opinions on the topic.
Class 6 Chapter 11 Reading and Writing On "Giant Rats and Landmines" Understand the text in Chapter 11 and express one's opinions on the topic.
Class 7 Review and Exam SReview the overall content of the course.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
