Course description and aims

This course trains students, who are interested in studying abroad for a year or longer, in listening and speaking skills. The course introduces students to a number of skills such as note-taking, presentation, and debate, which enable them to understand lectures and participate in seminars when they study in an English-speaking environment.

Student learning outcomes

- Students are able to understand the outline of the lectures or mini-talks in the listening section of the TOEFL.
- Students are able to grasp the main points of the lecture
- Students are able to make a summary by understanding its organization and the speaker’s approach to the subject.
- Students are able to answer in clear and fluent English to questions asked by their classmates.

Class flow

This course is designed to help students develop effective communication skills that are relevant and applicable to the TOEFL iBT. It is organized by topic. Each week, we will explore a different issue using audio lectures, readings, and discussion. There will be a vocabulary quiz each week because the development of vocabulary is crucial to academic success. Students are expected to study the vocabulary, complete all readings, and come to class prepared for discussion.

Assessment criteria and methods

The grade for the quarter will be determined as follows.
Class participation: 40%
Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn. Absences and late arrivals will result in a lower grade.
Vocabulary quizzes: 30%
Progress check: 30%
