Course description and aims

English 5 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Class flow

This class is structured to improve students' skills for reading and writing by reading essays on current science topics in various fields, expanding their vocabulary, and practicing writing sentences so that they can express their own ideas in English. After learning new vocabulary, students will read the article, understand its main idea and details, and practice reading the article aloud. The rest of the class time will be spent on writing exercises using some of the expressions learned. Students will also learn about how to organize paragraphs in papers and articles.

Class 4 Unit 3 Deeper and Deeper Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 9-12 of the textbook.
Class 5 Unit 5 Fierce Fungi Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 17-20 of the textbook.
Class 6 Unit 7 The Wolf Girls of Bengal Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 25-28 of the textbook.
Class 7 Unit 9 Crop Circles Do vocabulary and writing exercises and translate the reading section into Japanese on pages 33-36 of the textbook.
Class 8 Review and term-end examination Review the scope of the exam.
