Course description and aims

“Oral Expression in English” courses are devoted to improving students’ skills in speaking. Apart from the context of giving presentations, effective speaking also involves effective listening, so the classwork and homework in these courses require students engaged in speech and listening exercises.
As a graduate-level elective course, Oral Expression in English G IV is offered during the spring vacation as an intensive course, and focuses on the improvement of oral communication skills – in other words, speaking with confidence and in such a way as to have them understood, and active participation in conversations with a range of topics.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to speak for several minutes by themselves or in dialogues on a range of topics, paying attention to their own pronunciation issues.

Class flow

This course will enable students to turn the salient points of their research into a clear and compelling presentation. We will learn how to do four things: create meaningful content, simplify specialised language, design attractive slides, and find one's own voice. Students will do two assessed presentations during the course as well as practice speaking each class in different practical tasks.
