Course description and aims

All of the “Oral Expression in English” courses are devoted to improving students’ skills in speaking. Apart from the context of giving presentations, effective speaking also involves effective listening, so the classwork and homework in these courses require that students engaged in speech and listening exercises.

The materials and exercises in Oral Expression in English 4 build upon those of Oral Expression in English 3, and maintains the specific focus on generating effective oral communication involving listening and speaking between pairs of speakers. Objectives also include using vocabulary and grammar introduced in the textbook and classes.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently discuss a broader selection of more complex topics to do with society and cross-cultural phenomena in one-on-one conversations with people they have not met before.

Class flow

Attendance is taken at each class. Students are required to listen to and/or read assigned materials before class, preparing for focused discussions of their content. (Note: Assignments turned in late are penalized. Syllabus is subject to change based on the levels, needs, and actual number of students.)

Class 4 Individual Presentations and Papers: Deliver a 2~3 minute presentation on any controversial topic. Submit the presentation script.
Class 5 Unit 10: Connections Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing communication.
Class 6 Unit 11: Life in the Slow Lane Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing lifestyles.
Class 7 Unit 12: Make Yourself Heard Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing opinions.
Class 8 Group Presentations and Papers: Methods or Places to Relax and Recharge Collaborate with classmates to present on a way or place to relax. Submit the presentation script.
