Course description and aims

This course gives an overview of various kinds of artworks that deal with social issues such as gender and poverty. In the 2nd through 5th classes, each class will focus on one theme and related works. In the 6th class, students will visit an exhibition on their own in advance and discuss it in class. In the final session, each student will present the plan of an art project dealing with any social issue.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Know the brief history of socially engaged art.
2) Understand how to approach social issues through art.
3) Learn to put aesthetic impressions into words.

Class 3 Theme 2: Immigration Enjoy the artistic way to deal with the problem of immigration.
Class 4 Theme 3: Poverty Enjoy the artistic way to deal with the problem of poverty.
Class 5 Theme 4: War Enjoy the artistic way to deal with the problem of war.
Class 6 Discussion Visit 8th Yokohama Triennale and exchange your findings with classmates.
Class 7 Presentation Present your own plan for artistic project on any social issue.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
