In this class students will learn about Japan’s situation moving towards an increasingly multicultural society. Students will also learn what a “diverse society” is, and what is needed to live in such a society.
Cases in other countries with various cultures, ethnics and religions will also be covered. This class also aims on gaining abilities to communicate with people with different backgrounds and culture by working in groups and discussing, using concept and methodology of cross-cultural communication.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the situation of multiculturalism in Japan, raise and analyze issues.
2) Build a diversity understanding attitude and coexist with people from different cultures.

A question regarding the topic of the day will be provided. Students will work on it individually or in a group, followed by lecture, discussions and exercise problems.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
