Course description and aims

This year, it will be offered by online. So it is going to be a new challenge, even though the purpose is the same.
This course inherits the spirit of the small group work of the Visionary Project, aiming for students to improve real-life, people to people communication skills. People are social beings, so thinking, learning, and creating together with others are essential and fundamentally gives us pleasure. Students in this course will aim to improve their communication skills through participatory style workshops.
The aim is for students to become skilled in communication in an enjoyable way by experiencing self-introduction, interviews, dialogue, and presentations.

Student learning outcomes

Students will acquire the following skills from taking this course.
1) Gain an understanding of the pleasure and difficulty of the creative dialogue with someone they met for the first time, and be able to create opportunities for developing a conversation on one's own.
2) Learn to speak clearly as a good speaker, and be able to create a relaxed environment as a good listener.
3) Gain the basic skill for collaboration and co-creation which are really necessary today.

I used to work for an advertising company for 30 years, and solve the problems of the clients and society by the power of communication. I studied Organizational Development and Transformation in U.S., then I practiced the participatory learning community in various fields. I applied these facilitation skills into the class, and let students have dialogue and collaboration.
Because of covid-19, we cannot gather face to face. So this is a new challenge of interactive communication by zoom.

Class flow

We use zoom this year. This course will be run in a workshop format in the style of first-hand participation, with students at the center, split into small groups to discuss with one another, rather than just a one-directional lecture from the instructor. Students will gain experience with a variety of methods step by step, to gradually improve communication skills. Active participation of the students is indispensable.

Class 1 Overview of the course. First group work such as introducing each other. Preparation for good self-introduction.
Class 2 The basics skill of communication. The basics of speaking and listening, and brainstorming. Check-in and self-introduction. Preparation for the interview.
Class 3 Mutual interview. Active listening, taking note, and edit the article. Then introducing partner to others by using the interview article. Writing articles.
Class 4 World Cafe. Experiencing the large scale dialogue. Extraction of the essence of the large scale dialogue.
Class 5 Preparation for the presentation. The theme is "What am I going to explore the university. Preparation for the presentation.
Class 6 Presentation of all participants in small groups. Reflection on the World Cafe.
Class 7 Reflection of the whole class. Reflection on what you learned.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Active participation to the class:70%, Final report:30%
Coming late and less concentration will not be accepted.
