Course description and aims

" Gender is quite often considered as a matter of course, interpreted on the basis of their reproductive role. However, these stereotypical ideas shall be completely done away with. This course of lectures focuses on gender (and sex) and explains its character from sociological point of view. Topics include definitions and theories of gender and sex, social constructs of gender, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and social problems of gender in present-day Japan. The course enables students to acquire the sociological imagination, specialized knowledge, and ability to cope with these problems of gender.
The aims of the course are 1) understanding social constructs of gender, 2) learning a perspective that personal problems of gender are related to social issues, 3) acquiring an imaginative faculty to gender and social issues."

Student learning outcomes

"By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the definition of gender as social constructs.
2) Acquire the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience about gender and the wider society.
3) Explain the recent social problems of gender with specific examples and concrete data.
4) Raise the solutions to social problems of gender in present-day Japan, using examples and data logically."

Class 6 A comparative sociology of "motherhood" Understand many forms of the norm of "motherhood", and the history of the norm of "motherhood" in Japanese modernity
Class 7 Current states of Japan: gender in labor and employment Understand the present situation of gender in the field of labor and employment in Japan.
Class 8 Current states of Japan: gender in household Understand the present situation of gender in the field of household in Japan.
Class 9 Maggiage and child-rearing as gender issues Understand the gender problems about marriage and child-rearing in present-day Japan.
Class 10 The relations between gender issues and social system's problems in present-day Japan Understand the relations between present gender issues and social system's problems in Japan. (ex. institutions, economical situations)
Class 11 Social dysfunctions of gender devision of labor in present-day Japan Understand social backgrounds of the dysfunctions of male bread-winner model in present-day Japan, and explain concrete examples of the dysfunctions.
Class 12 Social challenges and measures to counter gender problems Understand and consider social challenges and measures to counter gender problems.
Class 13 Diversification of lifestyles and gender Understand the present trend of diversification of lifestyles and explain its limits, from a gender perspective.
Class 14 Individualization and gender Understand the concept of "individualization", and explain the problems of "freedom of choice" and gender issues.
Class 15 Social changes and the future of gender issues. Explain the future problems of gender, based on social changes in the present.

Assessment criteria and methods

"The term-end exam only.
1) Student's basic knowledge about gender studies, technical terms, social situations and problems about gender.(60%)
2) Student's ability to explain and consider with specific examples and concrete data about given subject.(40%)"
