Course description and aims

This course is for us to think about what kind of university Tokyo Tech is. Students will listen to lectures on the people who built the over 130 year history of Tokyo Tech, and their achievements, tour relevant locations on campus, come in contact with the results that have been produced, learn the history, and think about the future. Tokyo Tech students aspiring to be experts in science and engineering will think about the future of both Japanese science and engineering through Tokyo Tech's history.

Student learning outcomes

Students will acquire the following skills from taking this course.
1) Be able to accurately describe who was involved with the establishment of Tokyo Tech and its transitions.
2) Be able to choose and specifically explain representative achievements generated from Tokyo Tech
3) Be able to explain the period backdrop of and connections with Tokyo Tech's history.

Class flow

One topic is covered during each class period. In each class, group discussion will be held or exercises done for 15 minutes. The rest of the time is for lecture. In the final 5 minutes, students will write their thoughts and questions on a comment card. Students will give presentations in the final few classes.

Class 2 Introduction to museum studies, how to introduce Tokyo Tech: preparation for presentation Be familiar with the way of museum exhibition and understand the requirements for presentation.
Class 3 Formation of campus of Tokyo Tech Explain the formation of campus of Tokyo Tech, using maps of the campus.
Class 4 People who made Tokyo Tech: Life and Works of Sei-ichi Tejima Explain life and work of Sei-ichi Tejima, who played a most important role for foundation and development of predecessor of Tokyo Tech.
Class 5 A campus tour Make a tour of the campus, seeing buildings and places with your own eyes and explain one which has attracted your attention.
Class 6 Researches on Holography in Tokyo Tech Expalin a history of research on holography in Tokyo Tech.
Class 7 People who made Tokyo Tech: Life and Works of Taizo Masaki Explain the life and work of Taizo Masaki, who was the first president of Tokyo Vocational School.
Class 8 Architecture in Tokyo Tech: From Yoshiro Taniguchi, Seike and Shinohara to Sakamoto Explain the tradition of "architect-professor" from Yoshiko Taniguchi, Kiyoshi Seike, Kazoo Shinohara to Kazunari Nakamoto.
Class 9 Faculty of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Tokyo Tech: Its Origin and Attraction Understand the origin and its development of the newest Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology
Class 10 History of Quantum Mechanics and Kiyosi Amano Explain the life and work of Kiyoshi Amano, who introduced the history of quantum mechanics in Japan.
Class 11 People who made Tokyo Tech: Life and Works of Gottfried Wagener Explain the life and work of Gottfried Wagener, a foreign specialist, who played an important role for establishment of modern ceramics in Japan.
Class 12 People who made Tokyo Tech: Life and Works of Koroku Wada Understand the life and work of Koroku Wada, the president of Tokyo Tech in the 1940s and 50s, who played an important role in the radical reform in the post-war period.
Class 13 Tradition of Ceramics: From Kanjiro Kawai and Shoji Hamada to Tatsuzo Shimaoka Understand the tradition in ceramics from Kawai and Hamada in the 1910s to Shimaoka in 2000.
Class 14 Presentation Present a talk on a person or work, which played an important role in the history of Tokyo Tech.
Class 15 Presentation Present a talk on a person or work, which played an important role in the history of Tokyo Tech.
