Course description and aims

Life and death studies are an academic subject which inherits the cultural resources of religious study and religion. In this subject we intend to study the art of death and various memorial rituals for the dead by the living. We focus on observing one's own values and lifestyles rather than philosophical reflection on death. Basic concepts for understanding religion will be explained from the aspect of the life and death study. Through group discussion, our life and death values will be shared in the class.

Student learning outcomes

Students will learn how our ancestors thought about and how modern people engage with the inescapable challenge of death. They will be able to explain their own view on life and death matters, free from any particular religious bias, and understand others' view in relation to their cultural background and human heritage.

Class flow

The lecturer presents the basic concepts about religion focusing on the life and death study topics. Then in group discussion members will share the values on death.
Because the lecturer explain on the course plan and grading, attend and be careful to follow the orientation session.

Assessment criteria and methods

Summary and comment at the end of every class (35%), group presentation in the final session (20%), final report (2000 character for book review and 3000 character for your comment),45%) are examined, focusing on the topic understanding. Missing one session (one day) will result in an automatic lowering of your final grade by 10%. Missing three or more sessions (three days or more) will result in automatic failure of the course.
