Course description and aims

The aim of this class is to try to find the answers for solving the examples in usual language use.

The class is devided into small groups and the students try to find the proper answer(s) through discussion.

Class 1 Language and Society Do research on Linguist, William Labov.
Class 2 Bi-lingualism and Multi-lingualism Do research on semilingualism.
Class 3 Dialect Browse some pages of ``Kagyuko'' by Kunio Yanagida and take some notes.
Class 4 Language Change Explain an example of Japanese language change except ra-removed words.
Class 5 Language register and style Compare a written style of email with that of academic paper.
Class 6 Linguistic competece and performance Do research on Linguist, Noam Chomsky.
Class 7 Presentation Prepare a presentation on a theme that you have chosen.
Class 8 Summary Send comments on the last presentations by email.

Assessment criteria and methods

Assessment is based on the contribution to discussions, poster presentations, a final report: participation 30%, assignments 20%, test, 20%, poster presentation 30%
