This course provides the knowledge concerning the concept of cascaded use of resources for the optimization of resource use efficiency, and the methodologies for the production of materials and energy to minimize waste materials and energy.
At the end of this course, students will be able to provide basic strategy on the use of resources and waste that contribute to the construction of a recycling-oriented society.
Biomass, Biorefining, Biogas, Composting, Cascade use of biomass
✔ Specialist skills | ✔ Intercultural skills | Communication skills | ✔ Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
In the first half of the class, a summary of the previous lecture are provided. In the latter half, the main points are discussed in detail. Students are asked to provide solutions to some of the questions that have been posed as necessary. Always check the required learning for each class and be sure to complete them as part of preparation and review.

Class 1 | Biomass resorces and wastes | Understand the importance of the effective use of the biomass resource and waste that are abundantly present on the earth |
Class 2 | Biorefining, production of chemicals from biomass resorces | Explain the production of chemicals as an example of biorefining which is a conversion technology for biomass |
Class 3 | Biorefining, production of fuels from biomass resources | Explain the present state of the art and production principles for bioenergy which is attracting growing interest as one example of biorefining |
Class 4 | Wastewater treatment, fermentative biogas production | Understand the principle of conversion technology used to produce biogas from wastewater as a raw material |
Class 5 | Wastewater treatment, new innovation in biogas production | Explain new technologies for monitoring the performance of biogas plant using molecular biology |
Class 6 | Solid waste utilization, compost suppressing plant pathogens | Understand the production procedure for compost which suppresses plant diseases among the applications of solid waste composting |
Class 7 | Solid waste utilization, production of high quality biofertilizer: Summary | Explain the principle of the methods for utilizing molecular biology for the reproducible production of compost with high fertilizing effects |
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
No textbook is set. Handouts will be distributed at the beginning of every class.
Handouts will be distributed at the beginning of class when necessary and elaborated using PowerPoint slides. PowerPoint documents that are to be used in class will be made available in advance via the OCW-i system. Students are expected to use these documents for preparation and review purposes.
Learning achievement is evaluated by quizzes, questions and answers during classes, and the final report. The final examination will not he held.
Enrollment in the Biological engineering (TSE.A206) or class related to the fundamentals of biological engineering is desirable (not compulsory)
