Course description and aims

In the elementary practice, this course reviews fundamentals which have been learned in the lecture "Surveying", and gives instruction of techniques of surveying using basic equipments. In the camp, this course introduces advanced equipments. Through the practicing surveying with them, students will learn characteristics difference with the basic equipments. This course also shows most-advanced equipments that are supported by computers and GPS (global positioning system). This course develops communication skills as well as the surveying skills.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Treat errors by appropriate method.
2. Conduct levelling, traverse survey, topographical survey, and detail mapping with other people.
3. Describe difference between characteristics of basic surveying equipments and ones of advanced surveying equipments.

Class flow

Students must attend guidance of which date will be notified by the notice board of department of civil and environmental engineering. The guidance will give overall instructions and information about the training camp. After class 1, the course will be held in field. The training camp will be performed in cooperation with a surveying company. Students performs practice of surveying in groups. Team work and communication skills are essential elements to acquire good achievement.

We will lend a text book "Report on surveying and its equipment, Sokkia-topcon corporation, 2011" during training camp.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

"Introduction of practice of survey" are provided during class.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be assessed on their attendance, precision of surveying, and considerations in reports. The precision of surveying will be evaluated in respective groups. The considerations in reports are evaluated in every student.
