This course consists of two experiments: (i) experiments on structural mechanics and (ii) experiments on hydraulics.
In the experiments on structural mechanics, students will obtain a deeper understanding on basic theory of beam and buckling phenomenon of column structures and dynamic behaviors (vibration) of beam. In the experiments on hydraulics, students will obtain a deeper understanding on fundamental principles regarding water flow which have been studied in the lecture (Hydraulics II). The two different experiments were conducted, namely “water flow in pipe line” and “water flow in open channel”. In the end of experiments, student will have the PET bottle rocket contest, where students will design and create their original rockets based on the fluid dynamics.
In this class, students’ performance will be evaluated by three activities: (i) “interview prior to experiment” where students’ background knowledge on structural mechanics and hydraulics will be checked if they already have an sufficient knowledge to conduct the experiment, (ii) “experiment” where students’ attitude and leadership will be considered during the observation and measurement of various phenomena and (iii) “interview after the experiment” where students’ understanding on the experimental results and analysis will be evaluated.

3) Measure, analyze, and discuss about the vibration of beam.
1) Measure, analyze and discuss about the resistance occurring in the turbulence flow and laminar flow in circular pipe
2) Measure, analyze and discuss about open channel flow including hydraulic jump and water flow around the cylinder-shaped material.
3) Make the PET bottle rocket independently and creatively based on the fluid dynamics.

In addition, PET bottle rocket contest will be conducted after the two experiments were completed.

Students will be given the final evaluation using the average of the evaluations of structural mechanics and hydraulics.
【Structural mechanics experiments】Student's performance will be evaluated by individual report (100%).
【Hydraulics experiments】Students’ performance will be evaluated by five activities: (i) interview prior to experiment (7%), (ii) experiment (13%), (iii) interview after the experiment (20%), (iv) final report (27%) and (v) PET bottle rocket contest (33%).
