This course is to give an overview of cultural heritage conservation and energy supply and development.
Cultural heritage conservation is one of the important factors to develop sustainable built environment.
Conserving Cultural heritage, including historic buildings, makes a significant contribution to build sustainable local communities which constitute sustainable built environments. The reasons are as follows:
1) Understanding cultural heritage helps communities to build a local identity and create a sense of belonging.
2) Appropriate tourism development using cultural heritage activates regional revitalization.
3) Maintaining lifestyles and local industries through conserving cultural heritage secures its regional cultural diversities.
In addition, respecting historic environments and using historic buildings with proper maintenance contributes to conserving the global environment.
At first, this course will focus on the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation. After that, through various case studies from Japan and abroad, we shall learn how the cultural heritage conservation contributes to build sustainable built environments. At the end of this course, students will understand how to focus on the issues in the specific areas and propose the solutions using the cultural heritage conservation methods.
Energy Supply and Demand is one of the key factors to develop the sustainable urban environment. Recently there have been seen movements to promote smart energy network system in at various levels, from "smart house" to "smart community". However discussion only to the extent of demand side energy utilization is not sufficient for appropriate understanding of global warming, energy saving and other relevant problems. It should be important to get a whole picture, from primary energy supply to final energy consumption.
This lecture will provide basic explanation of energy balance, followed by introduction of current technologies and policies of energy related issues and technological development trend toward the future. Through this lecture, students will be able to discuss the relation between energy and urban environment from a broader perspective.
Through this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation.
2) Understand the various methods and techniques to develop sustainable built environments using the cultural heritage conservation.
3) Focus on the issues in specific areas and propose solutions using the cultural heritage conservation methods.
4) Understand the energy balance.
5) Understand the energy supply structure.
6) Build their own ideas about the energy related issues.
