Course description and aims

This course covers the role of automatic controls, the types and characteristics of sensors used in building services, and typical control methods with reference to the examples of the latest controls and the performance of automatic control devices.
The aim of this course is to learn the fundamental knowledge of automatic controls for building services, while providing an understanding of building management systems and instrumentation drawings.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the role of automatic controls and control methods in building services.
2) Make a basic design in consideration of automatic controls.

Class flow

Intensive course. Towards the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to what is taught on that day to solve.

Class 2 Sensors and control methods used in building services. Understanding of types and characteristics of sensors and typiacl control methods.
Class 3 Automatic controls in air conditioning systems. Understanding of building management systems and instrumentation drawings.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' course scores are based on final exams(70%) and exercise problems(30%).
