This course focuses on urban dwelling and covers the fundamentals of residential improvement in Japanese densely crowded areas.
At first, we focus on problems with urban dwelling after the 19th century, and specific approaches, such as model community and housing act.
Second, we focus on experimental urban dwelling in the early 20th century, such as ”Garden City” and garden suburbs in the western city, and transform of housing types.
In the latter half of this course, we focus on important factors and indicators of a living environment, and the way of analysis.
Finally, we learn planning and management skills, such as a design workshop through some practices.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)Explain the progress of planned communities in the early 20th century.
2)Explain the progress of residential improvement after the second World War.
3)Explain the urbanization and recent residential condition in Tokyo.
3)Research and analyze the situation of urban blight in residential areas.
4)Propose solutions for residential improvement in densely crowded areas.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.

1)Students will be assessed on their understanding of the origin and the progress of residential improvement, and their ability to apply them to solve problems.
2)Students' course scores are based on midterm reports(40%) and final reports(60%).
No prerequisites are necessary, but enrollment in the related courses is desirable.
