Course description and aims

Catalysts for reactions occurring in all living organisms are enzymes, so the understanding of the properties and functions of enzymes is indispensable for the understanding of life science and technology. This course covers the basics and applications concerning enzymes. The knowledge of biochemistry and organic chemistry will be applied to understand enzymes. The cutting-edge research using enzymes in the field of the medicinal, food, and environmental sciences, as well as organic chemistry, is also introduced. Furthermore, the opportunities to discuss, communicate and present about the field of studies are given.

The lectures about the enzyme improve your logical thinking ability, communication, and presentation skills as well as help your acquirement of technical knowledge. It is to cultivate the human resources that can lead advanced science and engineering through the studies of enzymes.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Acquire the basic knowledge about enzymes and enzyme kinetics. Understand the applied studies of bioengineering related to enzyme.
(2) Acquire the knowledge about enzymes controlling metabolism. Understand the effect of the enzymes on the diseases.
(3) Acquire the knowledge about application of enzymes to organic chemistry.
(4) Understand and present the recent research using enzymes in organic synthesis.

Class flow

Classes by Ogura and Ichinose will be lecture-style ones. Classes by Matsuda are interactive, and there are also group discussion opportunity. Presentation may be required at the classes by Ichinose and Matsuda.
