Course description and aims

This course gives fundamental knowledge of solid catalysts. Topics include properties of metal oxides and metal oxides as acid-base catalytic materials. This course also focuses on the structures of porous materials and its acidity and basicity. The effect of pore structures on the selectivity of catalytic reactions will be also discussed. Furthermore, catalysis by metal catalysts, sulfides, and oxide in typical reactions such as hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, metathesis, and oxidation reactions will be specifically explained from a chemical point of view. Finally, the role of solid catalysts in biomass conversions will be introduced.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Acquire fundamental knowledge of catalysis based on physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
2) Deepen their knowledge of chemistry through heterogeneous catalysis.
3) Understand catalytic materials such as metal oxides and porous materials, typical catalytic reactions (hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, metathesis, oxidation), and catalytic biomass conversions.

Class 6 Sulfide and Oxides Catalysts for Hydrogenation, Dehydrogenation, and Metathesis Explain hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions catalyzed by sulfides and oxides.
Class 7 Oxidation Catalysts, Biomass Conversions Understand catalysts for oxidation reactions and catalytic biomass conversions.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' knowledge of catalytic materials and reactions using solid catalysts will be assessed.
Learning achievement is evaluated by a final exam (80%) and reports (20%).
