[Summary of Lecture] In this lecture, planning of the multi-step synthesis of complex organic compounds will be explained.
[The aim of the lecture] In the synthesis of complex organic compounds, it is important to design synthetic strategy consist of multiple reactions. In this lecture, students understand synthesis unsaturated hydrocarbon and functional group transformations. In addition, student learn the synthesis of the acyclic organic molecules with several functional groups. Then, students understand the synthesis of cyclic compounds, and learn about the synthesis of bicyclic molecule that features two fused rings. Furthermore, students discuss about their designed synthetic scheme themselves. Finally, students acquire the ability to design the synthetic scheme of small organic compounds.
By the end of this course, students aquire the following ability
(1) Ability to explain the synthesis of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
(2) Ability to explain the synthesis of acyclic compounds having functional groups.
(3) Ability to explain the synthesis of cyclic compounds having functional groups.
organic synthesis, multi-step synthesis, cyclic compounds, fused ring, acyclic compounds, double bond, triple bond, oxidation, reduction.

In this course, the synthesis of unsaturated compounds and hydrocarbon compounds containing a functional group transformations will be explained. Based on the knowledge, students will be asked to propose the synthesis of acyclic compounds having functional groups and discuss with the other students about it. And then, the synthesis of cyclic compounds and cyclic compound having functional groups will be explained. Based on the knowledge, students will be asked to propose the synthesis of cyclic compounds having functional groups and discuss with the other students about it. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.
