Course description and aims

This course introduces recent polymer science studies performed in Tokyo Tech with reviewing the fundamentals of polymer structures and properties.
Students will understand the importance of the fundamentals of polymer structure and properties in polymer science and have the chance to understand the aims of graduate major courses on polymer science prior to their attending the lectures.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the fundamentals on polymer structures and properties.
2) Understand and explain recent advances in polymer science based on the fundamentals on polymer structures and properties.

Class flow

At the beginning of each class, the fundamentals on polymer structures and properties are exlained, and then recent advances in polymer science are explained.

Class 2 Morphology formation in polymer blends (Shuichi Nojima) Explain the mechanism of morphology formation in polymer blends.
Class 3 Polymer liquid crystals and their orientations (Masatoshi Tokita) Explain structures and orientations of polymer liquid crystals.
Class 4 Nanomecanical properties of polymer alloys and composites (Ken Nakjima) Explain basic of polymer alloys and composites and their nanomechanical properties.
Class 5 Structure-physical property relationships for optical, electronic and thermo-functional polymers, and development of new materials (Shinji Ando) Explain application of polymer spectroscopy to development of functional materials.
Class 6 Special lecture of polymer structures and properties Explain polymer structures and properties.
Class 7 Theoretical calculations of molecular structures and intermolecular interactions (Susumu kawauchi) Explain molecular structures and intermolecular interactions theoretically.
Class 8 Overall Exercises. (Hidemine Furuya) Evaluate achievemnet for classes.
