This lecture, followed to Advanced Polymer Synthesis I, will introduce various step-growth polymerizations, and then will explain the synthetic methods for polymers with special structures such as cyclic, branched and grafted ones and so on. The characteristics of their structures and physical properties will also be mentioned. Students will present the recent relevant topics searched by themselves. In addition, the synthetic methods for supramolecular polymers based on weak molecular interactions will be introduced.
The importance of step-growth polymerizations and polymers with special structures will be clarified for polymer synthesis. The applications will be reviewed in terms of their characteristics and the prospects will be explained.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the mechanisms of step-growth polymerizations in the point of views of organic chemistry.
2) Explain the mechanisms and characteristics of living polymerizations for step-growth polymerizations.
3) Explain the polymers having structures and their synthetic methods.
step-growth polymerization, polycondensation, polyaddition, living polymerization, supramolecular polymer, hyperbranched polymer, grafted polymer, and dendrimer, cyclic polymer, polyrotaxane
