Course description and aims

This Bioprocess Engineering course is intended for 3rd year students and focuses on the use of biocatalysts in production and material transformation. The aims of this course are for students to gain fundamental knowledge of enzymes and microorganisms used as biocatalysts, and reaction kinetics and fermentation balance from an engineering perspective. Also, process operation of bioreactor using microorganisms and sterilization process are explained.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) describe bioprocesses using microorganisms and cells.
2) explain characteristics of enzyme and its reaction kinetics
3) explain characteristics of microbial fermentation and its general kinetics
4) understand bioreactor design and its operation
5) describe the mechanism of genetic information transfer and protein expression.

Keywords

Genetic engineering, Microorganism, Enzyme, Metabolism, Reaction kinetics, Fermentation balance, Bioreactor

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Toward the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to what is taught in the class.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Introduction, What is Biochemical Engineering? Explain examples of bioprocesses
Class 2 Enzyme characteristics and processes Explain characteristics of enzyme and its reaction kinetics
Class 3 Microbial fermentation, fermentation balance, and growth kinetics Explain fermentation balance and growth kinetics
Class 4 Bioreactor, continuous culture, sterilization Explain characteristics of microbial fermentation using bioreactor and its operating condition
Class 5 Genetic engineering Understand the transfer of genetic information (including DNA replication, transcription, and translation), etc., and be able to explain basic genetic engineering techniques.
Class 6 Regulation of transcription and microbial production of target proteins Understand the mechanism of transcriptional regulation and be able to explain the mechanism of induction of target protein expressions in microorganisms.
Class 7 Examination Inspect the contents of the study and improve overall understanding through exercises.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 30 minutes preparing for class and another 30 minutes reviewing class content afterward (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
