Process Safety Management (PSM) is a safety management system not to occur the experienced historic process incidents again. The PSM is composed of the following; (1) the enforcement of the risk based process safety design, (2) the enforcement of the periodical PHA to identify new hazard, (3) the maintenance of the expected Risk level by the change management, (4) the mechanical integrity management and maintenance of the latest process safety information, and (5) the pre-startup safety review before starting the plant in operation.
In this course, after having learned about the providing process, the meaning and significance of PSM, the process safety design methods and methodology on the basis of risk are studied. Furthermore, the management of change process and PHA to maintain the safety level through the plant lifecycle are learned, and the process safety metrics to improve the PSM performance and LOPA (layer of protection analysis) method to evaluate a safe level are studied.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1.understand the meaning and the significance of the Process Safety Management (PSM) system which is implemented in the chemical process industries in U.S.A..
2.acquire the basic ability to perform the risk based chemical process design.
3.acquire the basic ability to design independent protection layers on the basis of PHA.
4.have opportunities to consider about defects on PSM through learning about process safety metrics and LOPA.

Attendance is taken in every class. The lecture of each time is carried out according to a theme, and students are assigned exercise problems to be reported.
