Course description and aims

This course is for doctoral students with work experience as members of society. They obtain credit(s) and GAs (Graduate Attributes) upon certification by the graduate major to which they belong that they have already substantially satisfied GAs required for doctoral students, based on their work experience and achievement including those at past working places as members of society in the past and present.

In light of the requirements of the GAs, the course should, in principle, be taken by those who have approximately 5 years or more of work experience in companies. (approximately 3 years or more for those who have worked in companies after completing a master's degree program).

The maximum number of credits that can be earned is 4 in total (including "Master’s Recurrent Program Advanced Practice"). For example, it is possible to obtain a total of 4 credits by combining "Doctoral Recurrent Program I of Materials Science and Engineering" and "Doctoral Recurrent Program III of Materials Science and Engineering", 4 credits by combining "Doctoral Recurrent Program II-I of Materials Science and Engineering" and "Doctoral Recurrent Program II-II of Materials Science and Engineering", or 4 credits by "Doctoral Recurrent Program IV of Materials Science and Engineering" alone. In the case that students take more than one course, the work experiences and accomplishments of the students to be certified in each course must be different from each other.

The courses are numbered as 1Q:1, 2Q:2, 3Q:3, and 4Q:4, with one 1-credit course ("Doctoral Recurrent Program I of Materials Science and Engineering"), two 2-credit courses ("Doctoral Recurrent Program II-I of Materials Science and Engineering" and "Doctoral Recurrent Program II-II of Materials Science and Engineering"), one 3-credit course ("Doctoral Recurrent Program III of Materials Science and Engineering"), and one 4-credit course ("Doctoral Recurrent Program IV of Materials Science and Engineering") offered in each quota (Q) .

Student learning outcomes

　Students with work experience as members of society can earn credits upon certification by their graduate major to which they belong that they have already substantially satisfied GAs required for doctoral students, based on their work experience and achievement as members of society in the past and present.

GA0D: You can clearly design your own career and contribute to realizing scientific, technological, or social innovation through
a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, skills, social responsibilities and ethics required to become an active
member of academia and/or industry.
GA1D: You can lead in realizing scientific, technological, or social innovation by acquiring the advanced leadership skills,
entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and expertise, and by developing social responsibility necessary for materializing your
designed career.

Class flow

Students shall consult in advance with their academic supervisor regarding the preparation of documents and materials objectively proving that they have already fulfilled the GA0D and GA1D requirements based on their work experience and achievements including those at their past working places, and the number of credits expected to be obtained.

Examples of work experience and achievements that may be considered for credit in this course are as follows；
-Leadership experience in the organization and subordinates in business within the company
-Leadership in standardization-related activities (*)
-Leading experience in planning and operation of events that can be objectively and clearly shown.
-Leading presentations at academic conferences (*)
-Past experience in academic conference activities, serving as an executive committee member of an international conference, etc.
-Leading authorships in journals and papers (*)
-Leading authorship of reviews and commentary articles (*)
-Leading patent applications (*)
(*) Do not duplicate the content of the "Seminar" courses they take.

　After completing the documents and materials, students should submit them to their graduate major via their academic supervisor. Students must not just show that they have experience and accomplishments, but must explain in detail how they have acquired each item of GA0D and GA1D in their work experience and accomplishments.
　Finally, the graduate major decides whether to approve the credit earned and the number of credit(s) earned from this course based on the documents and materials submitted by the students.

　When the graduate major approved for credit and the number of credit(s), the students should register for an appropriate course in the most recent Q available for registration. Then, the academic supervisor reports grades based on that approval.

　Details of the credit approval procedure are provided separately, so please check with your academic supervisor if necessary.

　If students want to take this course at the very end of their doctoral program, there may be no Q available. So students should take this course early.

　The graduate major approves the credit earned and the number of credit(s) earned from this course based on the documents and materials submitted by the students.
　This course will not be graded on points, but on a pass/fail basis.
