Course description and aims

Based on the various discipline such as engineering and economics, generation and solution of environmental problems will be discussed theoretically, and the relationship and gap between theory and practice on the environmental problems will be explained through the actual policy making process.
From the scenario analysis to solve the actual environmental problems, the process of problem establishment, planning of policies, and their implementation will be utilized for the actual problems.

Student learning outcomes

Based on the economic theory and engineering approach, the students will be able to explain the environmental problems and their solutions. And the students will also be able to explain the gap between theory and practice by taking the actual environmental problems.
The students will propose and assess the environmental policies to an actual environmental problem.

Class flow

Each class will be explained by using the related literature. And through the presentation by students, the students will deepen the debate on the solution by environmental policies.

Class 8 Future scenario and uncertainty Explain the scenario development to treat uncertainties
Class 9 Energy supply and demand structure in Japan Understand supply and demand of energy in Japan, and understand the energy structure in Japan
Class 10 Theory and practices of environmental tax Understand the theory of environmental tax based on concept of marginal cost
Class 11 Air pollution in Asia Understand mechanism of air pollution generation and solution
Class 12 Future scenario and roadmap Understand how to realize future scenarios

Assessment criteria and methods

Periodical small report for each class (50%), presentation (25%) and final report (25%)
