Course description and aims

This course is intended to teach types and characteristics of manufacturing methods to undergraduate students. First, an overview of the basic various manufacturing methods used in the production of industrial products, including mechanical components, electric and electronic parts, will be taught, followed by the introduction of manufacturing process of the products. In particular, manufacturing methods of the components are focused, and students are allowed to understand fundamental characteristics and application of manufacturing processes, based on gaining the knowledge on the principle of manufacturing method in connection with the characteristics of materials. These knowledge are essential to perform functional and structural design of the products. Furthermore, students are allowed to learn how to select appropriate manufacturing method in accordance with the product through the discussion session.

The aim of this course is to make students understand fundamentals of manufacturing processes, which is necessary for the mechanical engineers. Furthermore, students will understand how individual manufacturing method is related to the industry, and how the methods contribute to the industry.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Have an understanding of overview of Monotsukuri and gain an ability to select materials processing method applied for individual industrial component.
2. Understand the fundamentals of manufacturing process, and gain an ability to ascertain merits and demerits of each process.
3. Gain the knowledge on the relationship between materials and processing, and utilize the knowledge.

Class flow

1) Towards the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to what is taught on that day to solve.
2) Before coming to class, students should read the course schedule and check what topics will be covered. Required learning should be completed outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes.
3) Attendance is taken in every class.
4) Students must familiarize themselves with topics described in the required learning section before coming to class.

Assessment criteria and methods

The levels of attainment of student learning outcomes 1 through discussion carry a total weight of 10%.
The level of attainment of student learning outcome 2 through exercise problems related to what is taught on that day carries a weight of 30%.
The levels of attainment of student learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3 through final exam carry a total weight of 60%.
