Course description and aims

This course offers opportunities of research projects to international exchange students from foreign universities between which all of School of Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology and School of Environment and Society or each school have/has a student exchange agreement. Individual student works on a specific research topic determined through discussion with his/her host faculty and conducts the following items.
1) To clarify issue(s) to be solved through discussion and literature survey,
2) To establish a plan for solving the issue(s) and to modify it, if necessary,
3) To try to solve the issues by applying his/her knowledge in and around the science and engineering field in his/her department,
4) To conduct analysis and/or experiment practically and also to learn several associated activities,
5) To make discussion on the results of analysis and/or experiment,
6) To summarize the results into a report, and to make a presentation and discussion

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of science and engineering in his/her department to solve problems related to the field.
2. Study the fundamentals of fields other than science and engineering in his/her department independently to solve problems
3. Understand the significance of science and engineering problems in his/her department, judge their influence on society, and solve them.
4. Think and explain concepts logically, discuss them, and put them in writing
5. Work as an independent researcher and have the knowledge and oral competence to present his/her point of view effectively during discussions with people including disciplines other than science and engineering in his/her department.

Evaluated as Pass or Fail based on the report and the presentation by the department which his/her host faculty belongs based on the criterion determined by the department

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

(1)The student should be an international exchange student from a foreign university between which all of School of Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology and School of Environment and Society or each school have/has a student exchange agreement.
(2)The student should have earned 90% of credits required to graduate from his/her original university.
(3)The student should determine his/her research theme with his/her host faculty and should be approved his/her completion by department meeting to which his/her host faculty belongs before he/she comes to Japan.
