Course description and aims

This course deals with fundamental aspects of oxidation and reduction reactions along with synthetic applications. Starting from the definition of oxidation and reduction reactions, various oxidation reactions will be discussed based on the kind of the reagents. In particular, the mechanism and characteristic properties of the reaction including selectivity of the reaction will be discussed. Next, various reduction reactions will be presented in a similar manner. Several recent topics will also be presented.
The aim of this course is to understand the total figure of the oxidation and reduction reactions which constitute the important part of functional group transformation reactions in organic chemistry.

Student learning outcomes

The object of this course is to acquire sufficient knowledge of oxidation and reduction reactions, which are important organic reactions but have not been treated extensively. Through the study of fundamental aspects of the reaction along with application to various synthetic reactions, oxidation and reduction reactions will be understood systematically. Along with these studies, very basic aspects of various organic reactions will also be reviewed.

Lectures will be based on the distributed handouts and their explanation with writing on them. At the end of the class, students have to solve problem sets related to the lecture.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to course material and other reference books.

Assessment criteria and methods

Depending on the situation, the examination will be done at the last lecture. Students' knowledge of oxidation and reduction reaction along with basic aspects of organic reactions, and their ability to apply them to problems will be assessed by this examination, short tests and questions during the lecture along with problem reports.
