講義の概要とねらい
この授業はTOEFLをまったく知らないあるいは受験したことがない学生向けのTOEFL入門の授業である。英語の四技能のうち、特に聴解力と発話力の基礎力を磨きながら、TOEFLのテスト形式になれることを目指す。また短期留学に必要な基礎的な語彙を学ぶ。
到達目標
・TOEFLの出題形式や内容に親しむこと。
・クラス内でのペアワークやグループワークを通して聴解力と発話力を向上させること。
・短いスピーチや会話を聴き、要点を理解したうえでその要点を短文で要約し英語を使って表現することができること。

| This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of storytelling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for presenting ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds. |

授業の進め方
We will continue to explore various issues using audio lectures, news clips, readings, and discussion. Students are expected to study the vocabulary and come to class prepared for discussion. In addition to developing their listening and speaking skills, students will acquire basic skills that are essential for creating and delivering effective presentations. The class is highly interactive, therefore students' strong commitment and active participation are the keys for success, not only for for themselves, but also for the entire class.

| 第4回 | TOEFL listening: Conversation TOEFL speaking: Understanding integrated tasks | Students will learn about the TOEFL speaking integrated tasks and practice speaking with a time limit. |
| 第5回 | Developing public speaking skills Vocabulary review quiz | Students will be asked to speak on a given topic. For the quiz, they are expected to review all the vocabulary covered. |
| 第6回 | Listening Test 1 Speech (Group 1) | Students assigned to Grop 1 will deliver a speech on a given topic. In the listening test, all students are expected to demonstrate the skills that they will have acquired during the course. |
| 第7回 | Listening Test 2 Speech (Group 2) | Students assigned to Grop 2 will deliver a speech on a given topic. In the listening test, all students are expected to demonstrate the skills that they will have acquired during the course. |
授業時間外学修（予習・復習等）
