Course description and aims

This course gives introduction to laboratory work in life science. The classes cover microscopic observations of diverse biological materials such as cells and organs of plants and animals, and also basic techniques to extract DNA and proteins.
This course aims to teach basic techniques and knowledge on life science as the basis not only for advanced life science but also for broad fields in science and technology.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will understand the fundamentals of life science, which shall be the basis for broad fields in advanced science and technology. In addition, the students will more deeply understand current topics related to life science.

Keywords

biology, cell, tissue and organ, DNA, proteins

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Conduct experiments using an original textbook. Students are divided into four groups, taking a class once every two weeks.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Introductory seminar for laboratory work Understand how to prepare for laboratory work and how to describe a scientific report
Class 2 Plant tissues, organs, and cells Understand how to use microscopes and understand the basic structure of plant cells
Class 3 Early development of echinoderms Understand the fertilization and early development of echinoderms
Class 4 Soil life Understand how to use microscopes and understand the biodiversity of soil life
Class 5 Animal (fish) tissues, organs, and cells Understand the basic body plan of animals
Class 6 DNA extraction Understand the procedures for extraction and quantification of DNA
Class 7 Protein extraction Understand the procedures for extraction and quantification of proteins

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

An original textbook is provided for free.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Not specified.

Assessment criteria and methods

Assessment is based on the quality of the written reports and on the status of submission thereof.

If your reports are found to contain materials plagiarized from literature, including the Internet, or reports by other students, your grade will be marked zero, and the University may take further disciplinary action.
