Course description and aims

This course offers exercises related to the contents of Fundamentals of Electromagnetism 1 and 2. Students solve given problems and present their answers. This will allow them to understand electromagnetism and prepare them to solve more general problems in physics.

Student learning outcomes

By completing this course, students will be able to:
1) Find mathematical solutions to problems in electromagnetism expressed by equations and explain the physical meanings of said solutions.
2) Acquire methods and approaches to solve more general problems in physics.

Keywords

Coulomb's law, Gauss's flux theorem, the Biot-Savart law, Gauss's law for magnetism, Ampére's law, Faraday's law of induction, the Maxwell-Ampére equation, Maxwell's equations

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

In this course, students solve given problems and submit a report. Problems will be given once every two weeks.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Solve problems related to Coulomb's force and Coulomb's law. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Take examples in our daily life which are related to Coulomb's force and become able to calculate numerically.
Class 2 Solve problems of electric field, electric potential and Gauss's law. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Become able to solve problems of Gauss's law on electric field.
Class 3 Solve problems of Biot-Savart law and Gauss's law on magnetic field. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Become able to solve problems of Gauss's law on magnetic field.
Class 4 Solve problems of Ampére's law. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Understand the conditions behind Ampére's law.
Class 5 Solve problems of Maxwell-Ampére's law. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Understand the effects of time-dependent electric and magnetic fields.
Class 6 Solve problems of Maxwell's equations and electromagnetic waves. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Understand how the wave equation is derived.
Class 7 Solve problems of properties of electromagnetic waves and photons. Solve problems of mathematics which are used for electromagnetism. Understand how electromagnetic waves are applied in our daily life.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
