Course description and aims

This course will be a laboratory work of observing extrasolar planets using a telescope and a CCD camera. Students will obtain and analyze observational data by themselves, and derive physical properties of extrasolar planets from the data. This course will provide students a chance to work on astronomical observations going one step beyond just stargazing.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand basics of photometric observations using a telescope and a CCD camera.
2) Understand transit technique as a method to detect extrasolar planets, and analyze the observational data.

Class flow

The course consists of lectures (1-2 times), observations (2 times), and data analysis (2 times). The observations will be conducted from 18:00pm to 22:00pm. Schedule of the lectures will be announced at the beginning of 3Q.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students must attend observations and data analysis. Students' knowledge of photometry, data analysis, and transit techqniue will assessed by final report (100%).
